Mary was the widow of Sgt. Robert H. Hughes of Company K of the 7th U.S. Cavalry, who was killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

Sgt. John J. Rafter was also a sargeant in Company K,a good friend of Robert H. Hughes, who survived the battle.

Mary Hughes married John J. Rafter on 17 February 1877, possibly at Fort Abraham Lincoln, home post of the 7th U. S.Cavalry.
