1898 ZEPHYRHILLS AREA. Lonnie was born on 22 March 1898. The exact place of his birth was six miles west of Zephyrhills at Six Mile Pond. Legal documents record this area's births as being Zephyrhills. He was the son of Edward Rowland Lyons (1871-1941) and Eliza Elizabeth Smith (1873-1946). Data by Pat Lyons

C1906, THE LYONS MOVE BACK TO PROSPECT. About 1906, his parents moved the family to a 35 acre tract located on the east side of Handcart Road near the old Thomas Lyon Homestead at Prospect Community. Lonnie and his siblings attended the third Prospect School located on the old homestead property. William Guy, the step-son of Thomas Lyon came into possession of that part of the Lyon property and deeded a section fronting on Keifer Road to the county to be used for the purpose of building a school. The school was built next to the huge oak tree that is still standing in 2014 on Keifer Road about a block west of Handcart Road. Personal knowledge and Research by Pat Lyons

1918 TYPHOID FEVER. In 1918, toward the end of WWI, David Smith, John Ryals, and Lonnie Lyons were hired to construct buildings for the military base at Marietta, Georgia. While on the job, Lonnie had a life threatening bout with typhoid fever. His father made the trip to Marietta, rented a place there, and cared for him until he could make the trip home. Lonnie had a difficult, long recovery period that included learning to walk again. The effects of the disease remained with him the rest of his life. Personal knowledge Robert Lyons

1927 MARRIAGE TO RUTH ARMISTEAD. The marriage ceremony between Lonnie Lyons and Ruth Armistead was performed on 23 February 1927 at the home (parsonage) of Rev. R. W. Carlton in Highland City, Florida with Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Whidden as witnesses and attended by Ruth's mother, Frances Armistead. Rev. Carlton was a dear friend of the Armistead family. MECHANIC, GARAGE & STORE OWNER. Lonnie was a mechanic at Ford Motor Company in Zephyrhills. On one of his work days, Lonnie was rebuilding a motor on a vehicle that was held by a hoist. The hoist suddenly broke and the motor fell on one of his legs. He was two years recovering. His parents again cared for him and the family. Lonnie eventually returned to work at Ford in Zephyrhills and later worked at Ford in Plant City. Lonnie then went into business for himself. He rebuilt engines, repaired cars and made homemade tractors out of motors and parts of old cars. He owned and operated a garage and grocery store in two different locations on Thonotosassa Road at Plant City. One of the stores was called "Three Oaks". Personal knowledge Robert S. Lyons

1940'S FOREMAN OF PLANT MAKING MILITARY TANKS. About 1940, Lonnie went to work at Dunedin at the Food Machinery as shop foreman in the sheet metal department making parts for military tanks. Before the United States entered the war, England finished assembling the tanks in England. Between 1941-1942, the Food Machinery was moved from Dunedin to Lakeland. Lonnie helped set up the equipment for the Lakeland site. The tanks, after we entered the war were assembled at Lakeland. Ruth also worked at the Machinery as a certified Navy welder and she was Shop Steward for the American Federation of Labor. Although WWII began in Europe in 1939, the United States did not enter the War until the attack of Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 "a date that will live in infamy" President Roosevelt. 1949 DEATH AND BURIAL. In 1948, Lonnie was very ill and Ruth cared for him at the Armistead house in Bartow. He died at Bartow General Hospital on 20 March 1949 at age 50 (51 minus 2 days). Funeral services were held at First Methodist Church in Bartow with Rev. Paul Redfearn officiating, assisted by Rev. R. W. Carlton of Tampa. Rev. Carlton, was the same minister who performed Lonnie and Ruth's Marriage ceremony in 1927. Burial followed in Wildwood Cemetery at Bartow, Florida. Father: Lonnie's father, Edward died as a result of a black widow spider bite. He died on 15 Dec. 1941. An all night vigil was held at his home attended by family and friends. Personal knowledge of grandson, RS Lyons.

Mother: Lonnie's mother, Eliza suffered distress and grief after Edward's unexpected death. Eliza became very depressed. She would sit in her rocker on the front porch and stare into space. She was very tearful at times. Eliza died on 22 Oct 1946 at the hospital in Chattahoochee, Florida. Personal knowledge of grandson, Robert Lyons.

Children:
Three children were born to Ruth Armistead and Lonnie Lyons, namely Robert Stewart Lyons (1928-2019); Dorothy Lee Lyons (1932-2019); and Lanny David Lyons (1934-2021).
