He was the son of Charles Adams (ne Fuhrmann) and Jessica Furman, and the stepson of his mother's second husband Lyman Saffin.

His parents' marriage ended with his father's sudden death in March 1900. His mother was acquitted, however his mother's remarriage in October 1900 resulted in the immediate suicide of Lyman Saffin's jilted girlfriend, Mary "Minnie" Pons.

He was the brother of Irving Jack Saffin (ne Adams) and the half brother of Gertrude Saffin (born 1902 in Ohio) and Barney Saffin (born 1912 in New York).

His paternal grandmother was Cecelia "Celia" Johnson, whose family immigrated from southern Sweden to the Utah Territory in 1857 to 1859 (the journey took years to complete), and whose family ultimately settled in Omaha, Nebraska in 1868.

During his mother's brief incarceration, the newspapers reported that his paternal grandmother had visited his mother in jail, and had promised his mother that she and the children would always be provided for by this late father's family

His Utah-based paternal great-aunt was the Mormon matriarch Christena Yorgason.

His maternal grandfather was George Furman, a native of New York. His maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Kay Furman, a dressmaker born in Canada, whose parents were born in the West Indies and in Scotland.

He married Blanche Van Buskirk, daughter of George Van Buskirk and Mame Kinzley Van Buskirk. They had no children.

It may be noted that during his life he reported the year of his birth as anything from 1892 to 1895, but newspaper articles upon his father's sudden death show that he was born just outside that age range, in 1891. Ultimately, 1891 was the year recorded on his gravestone.

In addition to being an expert on New Jersey bonds, he was a collector of important, collectible New Jersey financial instruments (currency and banknotes), and created the Richard Saffin collection which was auctioned off by Christie's in 1982.

He also amassed a large amount of land, some of which he donated to create the Saffin Rock-Rill Reservation, which is now part of the Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in the Morris County Park System, New Jersey.
