Longtime Butte area resident John R. Brookbush died Wednesday morning at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow, Idaho.
He was born July 10, 1913, in Iona, Idaho, one of 11 children of William and Lydia (Thornton) Brookbush. His family lived in various areas in southern Idaho while his father farmed in the Idaho Falls area.
John worked in a grocery store in Osgood, Idaho, for a time and then for the school district at Osgood.
He moved to Montana and married the former Beverly Humber in Butte on Jan. 15, 1935.
John worked at the Anaconda Smelter and retired from the Butte, Anaconda & Pacific Railway where he was a railcar inspector.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and as a younger man played basketball. He was a charter member of the Rocker Volunteer Fire Department and helped build and maintain the fire hall at Rocker. He had belonged to Butte Elks Lodge No. 240, bowled in various leagues for many years and was a scout master.
John and Beverly moved to the Moscow area in 1989 to be near family.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Brookbush of Moscow; daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Pat Moser of Pullman, Wash.; grand daughters and their husbands, Lori and Aldo Melchiori of Lacey, Wash., and Amy and Scott Krauss of Memphis, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by his many friends in this area.
He was preceded in death by seven sisters, three broth ers and son-in-law, Donald R. Galpin.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Graveside funeral services are 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, at Sunset Memorial Park west of Butte under the direction of Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home.
