US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Victor Maurice Daman enlisted in the Marine Corps on 15 December, 1942 from Harpers Ferry, Iowa. Completed recruit training at Recruit Depot, MCB San Diego and assigned to Base Depot, MCB Camp Elliott, CA.

During May, 1943 assigned to E Company, Infantry Battalion, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. 5 July, 1943 assigned to the 23rd Replacement Battalion, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. 13 July, 1943 promoted to Private First Class.

16 July, 1943 embarked SS President Polk at San Diego for movement overseas. Upon arrival in Wellington, New Zealand, assigned to B Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division at Paekakariki, New Zealand.

1 November, 1943 embarked USS Sheridan (APA-51) at Wellington. 7-14 November, 1943 landing rehearsals at Efate, New Hebrides. 20 November, 1943 Killed in Action during operations at Red Beach Two Tarawa D-Day, 20 November, 1943.

Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Amos E and Mrs Nellie A Daman, Harpers Ferry, Iowa.

Initially buried in US Navy and Marine Corps Cemetery 1, a short distance inland from Red Beach Two, Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll. Burial services by Chaplain Willard Wyeth.

May, 1946 reinterred in Lone Pine Cemetery, Betio Island.

13 January, 1947 remains placed in Schofield Barracks Mausoleum # 1, Oahu, Hawaii.

31 January, 1949 permanent burial in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii.
