Retired Lorain Municipal Judge Robert Allen Ewers, 76, of Lorain, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005 at Fairview General
Hospital in Cleveland after being taken there following an auto accident Wednesday.
He was born December 20, 1928, in Elyria and had been a resident of the area all his life. he was a graduate of Lorain High School, Balwin Wallace College and the Case Western Reserve Law School. He was a U.S. Navy Reserve veteran and a member of St. Mary's Church, Lorain.
Judge Ewers began his career in 1954, serving as assistant attorney general to William Saxbe. He became acting municipal court judge in 1968 by appointment of judge john S. Kolena and judge Valentine A. Toth to serve in their absence.
He also served as civil referee since 1976. He servered Lorain as a full-time municipal judge from 1979 until his retirement in December 2001 and received several awards for Superior Judicial Service from the Ohio Supreme Court.
He was a founding member of the Lorain County Mental Health and Mental Retardation Board (648) and served as a member of the Lucy Idol School Board. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts and the PTA. He headed the Cancer Drive with the City Of Lorain.
Judge Ewers was a member of the Lorain Kiwanis, Moose, Solvenian Club, IAV and the Ohio and Lorain County Bar Associations.He enjoyed playing the piano, theater, traveling, reading, music and camping. He was especially known for his integrity, sharp wit and his bow ties.
Survivors include his sons, William Robert Ewers and Raymond Ewers both of Lorain; daughters deborah Ewers of Lorain; Dr. Susan Pelini of Westlake, Katherine Passalacqua of Bay Village, Mary Ellen Ewers-Pena of Avon Lake; 12 grandchildren, and a sister Patricia Smith of Boston. he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Lois (nee Cimperman) Ewers on May 4, 2002; and his parents Ray A. and Rosella (nee Resar) Ewers.
