5718122 Private Roderick Sprigg, aged 21, from Merredin, Western Australia, was a farm hand prior to being called up for National Service on 27 January 1971. He joined 4RAR from 1 Australian Reinforcement Unit on 10 September 1971.
During Operation IVANHOE in Phuoc Tuy Province, on 21 September 1971, D Company was assaulting a heavily defended enemy bunker system during the battle of Nui Le. 11 Platoon was moving forward in the assault with 6 Section on the left flank when the section was hit by heavy, sustained automatic fire from several mutually supporting bunkers. Rod and another 6 section soldier, Private Brian Beilken, were killed instantly.
