Son of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Butler.

William served as a 2nd Lt. and pilot of a P-51, 23rd Fighter Squadron, 76th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force.

He resided at 111 Yarker, Rochester, Monroe County, New York prior to the war. He graduated from West High School in 1941.

He enlisted in the Army on April 10, 1942 in Los Angeles, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Shipping Clerk and also as Single, without dependents. He was employed at the Folmer Graflex, in California along with his brother.

He was intially trained at Maxwell & Craig Fields and graduated from Preflight in Nov. 1942.

After graduating from flight school he was honorably discharged from Army and commissioned a officer in the Army Air Force in May, 1943.

William was first declared "Missing In Action" and later, after his remains were recovered, as "Killed In Action" during the war.

He was awarded a Purple Heart.

He was credited with downing one Zero.
