Robert enlisted at Fort Wayne in June of 1942 when only 17 and left for Indianapolis on July 2, 1942. He received his "boot" training at Sand Diego and was sent overseas in November fo the same year. He has not been home since the day he left for induction. He went through radio school in New Zealand, and was awarded a medal as a sharpshooter. On two occasions, one just recently, he was hospitalized at Hawaii for malaria. Robert saw duty at Guadalcanal, Gilbert islands and engaged in the Tarawa campaign.
He was an active member of the United Bretheren church at Atwood where he played in the church orchestra. He was graduated from Atwood high school in June of 1942 shortly before hsi enlistment at Fort Wayne. He was a member of the high school basketball team for four years serving as team captain for one year.
