FINZEL,MARYLAND -- Austin J. "Tip" McKenzie, 86, passed on to his next life, Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at his home in Finzel, after a brave battle with lymphatic cancer.

Born in Avilton, he was the son of the late Raymond and Lula (Robison) McKenzie. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Gilbert "Gib" McKenzie; one sister, Celia Dugan; and a beloved son, John Joseph McKenzie.

Mr. McKenzie was a retired laborer and had been a member of Laborers Local 616 for 40 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and during the war "Tip" participated in the landing at Normandy and fought in various campaigns in the liberation of Europe. He received eight medals for his valor, including the Silver Star and the most recent being the Jubilee of Liberty medal issued by the city of Versailles, France.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Grace (Werner) McKenzie; two sons, Keith McKenzie and wife Tracy, and Kenneth Rosenberger and wife Doris, all of Finzel; six grandchildren, Julie Bittinger and husband Timmy, Kevin McKenzie and wife Stephanie, Jina McKenzie and boyfriend Jason Malone, Jesse Rosenberger, and Amy and Beth McKenzie; six great-grandchildren, Haley and Austin McKenzie, Leah and John Bittinger, and Abbie and Mariska McKenzie; two brothers, Leonard McKenzie and wife Virginia, Finzel, and Paul McKenzie and wife Shirley, Avilton; two sisters, Ann Fowler, Meadow Mountain, and Mary Emma Warnick, Mount Clemons, Mich.; and one daughter-in-law, Judith Linthicum McKenzie, LaVale.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friends can also go to durstfuneralhome.com. to send condolences.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Father William Moody officiating.

Interment will be in the Finzel Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted at graveside by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Rudy Shockey, Michael Shockey, Stevie McKenzie, Eric McKenzie, Jason Malone and Tim Bittinger.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Sacred Heart Oncology Dept., Hospice of Garrett County, Inc., Special Care Unit at Sacred Heart Hospital, and the Home and Hospice Care of Garrett County.
