Gail was born 5 May 1927 in Shelley, Bingham, Idaho to, Fredrick Knude Petersen and Claudia H. Miller Petersen. He recieved his early education in Shelley and attended High School there before enlisting in the U.S. Navy where he served from May 1944 to May 1946. In September of 1950 he re-enlisted in the Navy and served until October 1955.
He married Bonnie Jean Shepherd 24 May 1952 at Shelley. He worked as a maintenance engeneer at Pilsbury Co., formerly R. T. French Co. in Shelley for 35 years. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He died 1 Sep 1992 at his home in Idaho Falls, Bonneville, Idaho of cancer and is buried in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Shelley, Bingham, Idaho.
