Lockwood Boy Dies Of Crash Injuries
Joel Neil Lockwood Jr., three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe N. Lockwood, Poneto Route 1, died at 2:17 Thursday afternoon at the Wells County Hospital approximately three hours after he was injured when an automobile driven by his mother crashed into a tree on a county road one mile west and one-half mile north of Poneto.
The child's mother, Mrs. Barbara Ann Lockwood, 21, is reported in satisfactory condition today at the Wells County Hospital with fractures of the right arm, right leg and pelvis. She also suffered serious cuts about the face.
Mrs. Lockwood was driving north on the county highway when the automobile went out of control in loose gravel and struck the roadside tree squarely, according to State Trooper Ted Biberstine, who investigated.
The child suffered fractures of both legs, the nose and skull. A verdict of accidental death has been indicated by Dr. Joy Buckner, coroner.
Surviving the boy, in addition to the parents, are the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lockwood, Petroleum, and Mr. and Mrs. John Stauffer, Rockcreek Township.
The body is at the Jahn Funeral Home where friends may call after seven o'clock this evening.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 Saturday afternoon at the funeral home with Rev. Allan Stone of Petroleum officiating. Burial will be in the Elm Grove Cemetery.
