Roger C. Bowman, 69, of National Boulevard, Los Angeles, died Monday at Lawnwood Manor in Los Angeles after a long illness.
Born Aug. 18, 1927 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Burdette and Rebecca Hinkle Bowman. He was a 1945 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and attended Colgate University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts. He later earned a degree in education from the University of California at Los Angeles.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Bowman was a professional baseball player, pitching in the major leagues for the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates, and also played minor league ball for the Hollywood Stars in California for 20 years. At the same time, he owned and operated Roger Bowman Upholstery in Los Angeles, until retiring in March after 45 years in the business.
He was also a private pilot and aviation instructor in California for 20 years.
Mr. Bowman was a member and past president of the Westwood Exchange Club in Los Angeles and a member and past president of AirSpacers in Los Angeles.
At one time, he was a musician, playing with big bands in Caroga Lake.
He married Nancy Watson Bowman on May 26, 1985.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Russell C. Bowman of Los Angeles; two daughters, Jocelyn Paige Johnson of Corralitos, Calif. and Piper Jaye Bowman of Los Angeles; a stepson, Kevin Watson of Santa Monica, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Kerri Watson of Kent, Ohio; and several cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Burial will be in Hagaman Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the East Caroga Lake Protective Association.
