Cyril Francis Carper, age 72 of Oroville died on Friday, May 9, 2003 at the North Valley Hospital in Tonasket. He was born on September 30, 1930 in Paris, Arkansas to parents Francis and Edith Carper. He grew up and attended school in the Paris Area.

At an early age, he received his first horse from his Grandpa Terry as a Christmas gift. His Grandpa Carper followed with a saddle. He has continued to have a horse to this day. At the early age of 18, he started working in the coal mine. Being the youngest and smallest on his shift, he was nicknamed, "Peanut".

On August 26, 1949, he was married to Ann Miller in Paris, Arkansas by Ann's uncle, the Rev. Henry Cravens. Cyril continued to work in the coal mine until 1953 when his back was broken from a falling rock. In 1955, Cyril and Ann packed their few belongings into their 1949 Chevrolet and headed out west, settling in Oroville, WA. They decided west was best. In 1956, Cyril started working for the City of Oroville, driving the sanitation truck, which he continued for 36 years. During this time he got two fingers cut off in a freak accident.

Cyril had a faithful friend named Fred who made the daily rounds with him. Fred also slept with the truck at night. Cyril enjoyed riding his horse with his friends into the high country, parades, etc. He was a member of the Okanogan County Sheriff's Posse Search and Rescue. Cyril was a member of the Oroville Fire Dept., retiring after 36 years. He also worked on the ambulance as an EMT. Cyril loved the outdoors; camping, fishing, and hunting, and his garden and flowers. He also enjoyed being with his family, especially his granddaughters.

Surviving relatives include wife, Ann at home, 2 sons, Gaius and close friend Kim of Oroville; Gayle and wife (Lisa) of Oroville; 3 granddaughter, Calvana, Kasha, and Serena Carper all of Oroville; aunts, Jimmie and (Dwight) Cole of Ratcliff, Arkansas, Anna Jewell Schick of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Elizabeth and (Bud) Hickman of Paris, Arkansas. Numerous cousins and his beloved puppy, Cole.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2003 11:00 a.m. at the Bergh Chapel in Oroville with Pastor Claude Roberts, officiating. Interment will follow at the Oroville Riverview Cemetery.
