Benjamin Lockwood Keeler was born on 22 November 1841 in Odgen, Monroe County, New York, USA. Benjamin's parents were Benjamin Keeler and Hannah Lockwood (Waring) Keeler. Benjamin was united in marriage with Mary C. Clark approximately 1869.

The following was provided by the original contributor: "In the summer of 1860 he got a position teaching school at N. Chili, 8 miles from home that was about 20 miles west of Rochester NY; when school was finished in 1862, he enlisted July 26, 1862 at Rochester NY in Company C, 4th NY Heavy Artillery and served 3 years – promoted to Corporal December 31, 1864 and discharged June 5, 1865 at Munson's Hill VA; carried a small Bible and Robert Burns in his knapsack, service was with the Army of the Potomac; attended State Normal at Albany 1864-65; moved to northern Indiana with his aged mother; then moved further west to get their own land and was persuaded by his brother Samuel, to bid on some school land for sale 5 miles north of Traer IA and got 160 acres of raw prairie land for $11.50. He never tired of telling the advantages of his adopted state of Iowa, where he lived until 1905 when he removed to Colorado on account of Mary's health."
