Richard served as a Private, 1st Delaware Infantry Company I, during the Civil War.

He enlisted in 1st Delaware on September 19, 1861 in New Castle, Delaware for a 3 year term. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being 25 years old, 5' 8 1/4" tall, dark complexion, gray eyes, dark hair, and employed as a carpenter.

Richard died of disease in Camp Hamilton, Hampton, Virginia during the war.
