Athalee (Lee) Adams Lomas, 91, of Spartanburg, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2009. Mrs. Lomas was a resident of White Oak Estates and former resident of Summit Hills.
Mrs. Lomas was born on Dec. 22, 1917 in Union, SC. She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Ethel Johns Adams. She was the widow of George Arthur Lomas. Surviving are two brothers and one sister, Doris Mitchell of Columbia, SC, Ernest "Twig" Adams, Jr., of Union and Rev. William "Bill" Adams of Spartanburg. She was predeceased by brothers: Ralph Adams of Union, Roger Adams of Spartanburg, and Donald Adams of Greenville, SC.
She graduated from Union High School in 1935. She graduated from the Capital School of Nursing, Gallinger Municipal Hospital, in 1938 and then attended a Catholic University to further her education.
In 1940, she entered the Army Nursing Corps at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C. Her service here extended from World War II through the Korean War. She served at Second General Hospital, Laudstuhl, Germany for three years. In 1955 she was transferred to Fort Mead, MD, and later to Fort Sam Houston, TX. Her military service for our country spanned 22 years and she received the following awards and medals: the American Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the WWII Victory Ribbon, the American Theatre Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal - Germany, and the Army Occupation Medal - Germany.
Following retirement, Mrs. Lomas held a membership in the Military Order of World Wars - Augusta, GA Chapter and the Officers Club of Ft. Gordon, GA. She was a life member of the College Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the George Walton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Colonies, Augusta.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 30, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, Davis Chapel conducted by Rev.Sal Barone and Rev. William "Bill" Adams.
Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens will Full Military Honors.
Visitation will be held from 9:45 AM to 10:45 AM in the church parlor.
