Mr. Pettigrew died June 9, 2007, at his residence.
He was born August 1, 1915, in Edgewood to John Alexander and Mattie York Pettigrew. He grew up in Edgewood. He was owner/operator of Pettigrew Trucking, and later established Pettigrew Ready-Mix. In 1977, he helped form Pettigrew Transport Inc., which is still in operation. He was active in community affairs, serving as fire chief from 1957 to 1959. He helped farm sweet potatoes to pay for the first fire department building. He served several years on the tax equalization board for the Edgewood Independent School District and was a charter member of the Edgewood Lions Club formed in 1950. He was active with the chamber of commerce in the 1960s, and was instrumental in getting the first street signs installed in Edgewood, along with the sign welcoming people to Edgewood. He was voted Man of the Year in 1969. He was a lifelong contributor and supporter of the Edgewood Historical Society.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Marie Pettigrew; his parents; brothers, Merlin Pettigrew and Harold Pettigrew; and sisters, Annice Gonzales and Mabel Johnson.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Wayne Parker, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, John Lloyd and Betty Pettigrew Jr., Tomball, and Robert M. and Maurine Pettigrew, Edgewood; grandchildren, Doug Parker, Ann Gallaway, Marlo Pettigrew, Greg Pettigrew, Bree Dolan and Lee Smith; and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers included Doug Parker, Greg Pettigrew, Corey Smith, David Funderburk, Rick Jones and Mike Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers were Michael Gallaway, Kenneth Herridge, R.E. Jones, Walter Keith, Joe Allison, L.J. Watson, Jerry Eubank and Edd Evans.
