In life, Cary Ann was a graduate of the University of Illinois Law School, and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar in 1938. She worked as an attorney with the law firm Kirkland & Ellis for 33 years, and she was admitted to the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1957.

She was a long-time director of the Women's Bar Association of Illinois, and helped to found the Women's Bar Foundation in 1968.

Although she had no children of her own, she is dearly loved by her 3 nieces and 3 nephews.
