NEWPORT - Essie Marie Smith, 86, of Newport and a former resident of Entiat, died Monday, Sept. 26, 1994, in the Pend Oreille Pines Nursing Home.
She was born Oct. 13, 1907, to Harrison and Fannie (Cowan) Bell at Monticello, Ky.
She married Charles Clark Smith on Aug. 6, 1931, in Kentucky. They lived with his family in Wyoming for a few years, then moved to Entiat in 1933.
They owned and operated a shoe repair and leather craft shop until about 1953 when their property was purchased for the Rocky Reach Dam project. They moved to Diamond Lake and ran a shoe and leather craft shop out of their home.
Mr. Smith died on Dec. 23, 1976. Mrs. Smith moved to Newport the following year.
She was a member of the Noble Grange.
She is survived by her 100-year-old sister, Eva Bell of Monticello, Ky.; and several nephews and nieces. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother.
Arrangements are by Sherman and Knapp Funeral Home, Newport.
