Died aboard a riverboat sailing north from the port of New Orleans, up the Mississippi River to Missouri. He was buried along side the riverbank somewhere between Natchez and Greenville, Louisiana. His uncle, George Brewerton, who was with him, died and was buried a week prior on the same route.
His parents, who had stayed in New Orleans because of his mother's illness, did not know of the deaths for three weeks.
