Darell Boyd Harmon Jr., 87, of Arab died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Marshall Medical Center North.
Mr. Harmon was born in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, on Nov. 10, 1921. He was married to Marie Hodgens Burks Harmon. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He obtained his Ph.D from UCLA and worked for McDonnell-Douglas at the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Program. Darell was presented numerous awards for significant accomplishments in developing and using technology that is required for missile systems. He demonstrated expertise in Aero Dynamic Guidance, Thermo Physics, Navigation Control and Propulsion which led to substantial improvements in Missile Systems. He was a volunteer for over 20 years at Huntsville Hospital, a consultant for Boeing Aero Space and was inspirational for Ballistic Missile Defense in Huntsville.
Darell is survived by his wife, Marie Burks Harmon; son, Michael Harmon of Montevallo; stepson, Johnny Burks of Arab; daughter, Laurie Garvel of California; stepdaughter, Leslie Vande Walle of California; six grandchildren; and a sister, Lois Anderson of Arkansas.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be today, May 28, 2009, at 11 a.m. in Burningtree Memorial Gardens with Greg Bradford officiating and Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel directing.
