Glenn McDonald, 62 of Smiths Falls, formerly of Brockville and Mallorytown, died suddenly of a heart attack on April 28 at Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital.
He was born William Joseph Glenn McDonald on December 1, 1940 in Mallorytown, to John Maxwell and the former Sadie Leeder. He moved to Brockville when a young child, graduated from Brockville Collegiate Institute and completed an automotive mechanic apprenticeship in Toronto and Brockville.
He owned and operated Glenn's BA, Glenn's Texaco and Glenn's Gulf, then was service manager at Rockway Pontiac and Buick dealership, Brockville. After that he was general manager of the Brockville Truck Centre and later was service manager at Brockville's Canadian Tire store. At the time of his death, he was employed at Mike Fair Chev Olds in Smiths Falls.
He married Ann C. Healey on September 28, 1968 in St. Philip Neri Church in Toledo.
He belonged to St. Francis Xavier and St. John Bosco parishes in Brockville and finally St. Francis de Sales parish in Smiths Falls. He was involved with the Knights of Columbus in the past.
He ran for municipal office and became a councillor in the Township of Front of Yonge in January 1977. He continued as a councillor until November 30, 1980 and became deputy reeve on December 1, 1980, holding that office until November 30, 1985. He was a member of United Counties Council from 1980 to 1985.
Mr. McDonald was well known as a mechanic, tow truck operator, hockey and baseball coach and sponsor.
He enjoyed his workshop, woodworking and wood crafts. He took a keen interest in his own family, grandchildren and pet dachshund.
He is survived by his wife, Ann McDonald; two sons, John Glenn McDonald and wife Stacey of Brockville and Craig Thomas McDonald of Etobicoke; two grandchildren, Danielle Catherine McDonald and Maxwell William McDonald; three sisters, Anne Shaw and husband Ted of Las Vegas, Nev., Mary McDonald of Concord, Calif., and Irene Allen and husband Steve of Kenmore, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.
Also surviving are several brothers and sisters-in-law, first cousins, mother-in-law Eliza Healey of Toledo, and aunts Angela Flood of Athens and Hilda Leeder of Brockville.
He was predeceased by both his parents and a brother Raymond in infancy.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, on April 30. The funeral was held May 1 at St. Philip Neri Church, Toledo, with Fathers Chisholm and Amato officiating. Burial followed at St. Philip Neri Cemetery, Toledo.
The pallbearers were Don Jordan, Edward Muldoon, Allan Armstrong, John Shaw, Tom Flood and Jim Leeder.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
