His family came from Kentucky and settled for a time, about 1835 at Harrison Township, now Clay City, Clay County, Indiana.
In 1852 they immigrated from Iowa with LDS Church members in the John S. Higbee/James W. Bay wagon company to the Great Salt Lake Valley in Utah.
They settled at Willard, Box Elder County, Utah and he married Mary Caroline Turnbaugh 14 September 1856 at Salt lake City, SL, Utah.
They were parents of eleven children, seven sons and four daughters.
A divorce eventually parted them and his wife, Mary Caroline, married Isaac Stuart Riddle on 9 November 1886 at Logan, Cache, Utah. (Riddle died 1 September 1906 and Mary Caroline lived until 20 August 1914 - she is buried at Manti Cemetery, Sanpete, Utah).
