Early in his life, his family moved to their own farm near New Home, Texas where they farmed. Early in his life, H.D. learned Spanish from one of Poncho Villa's generals who was a migrant farm worker that he worked with in the cotton fields of their farm.
H.D. married Loveta Mae Carmichael in Elida, New Mexico. After they married they lived near Tahoka, Texas.
He worked for his uncle, Bill Guinn, as an oil driller. Later he built his own water well drilling company, Irrigation Well Service Company, based in Lubbock, Texas.
He and Loveta had three children, Willie Ruth White Tatum, Donald MacLane White and Michael Ray White.
In 1968, H.D. ran unsuccesfully for Lubbock County commissioner in the 4th district. He was also very involved with Texas politics in the Democratic Party.
In the early 1970's he sold his business and used his Spanish skills by traveling across Mexico selling heavy equipment to Mexican customers.
After the passing of Loveta in 1975, H.D. later married Julie Ray in Lubbock, Texas in 1982 (est).
During his last years, H.D. resided in Lubbock and passed away at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock, Texas due to cancer at the age of 88.
H.D. was buried in the cemetery in Post, Texas.
