Residing in McDowell County, North Carolina at the time of enlistment. Enlisted in the 9th North Carolina Infantry, Company A on October 13, 1863. POW on June 2, 1864 at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia. Confined on June 12, 1864 at Point Lookout, Maryland. Transferred to Prison on July 9, 1864 at Elmira, New York. Died of Anasarca as a POW.

He was the son of James Blanton and his wife, the former Miss Mary Vestal Jay.
