BIRTH FAMILY
John Lasswell, born to Andrew Lasswell in Cameron Parish, Loudoun County, VA.

FIRST FAMILY
Married (#1) Susan Dolan (b. abt. 1776 in VA) before 1802. Sired two verified, possibly eight or nine*, children: ** ****
1) Andrew (b. 1802, d. 1869)***
2) John
3) James
4) Isaac J. (b. 1820, d. 1896)
5) Philip
6) Jacob
7) Aaron
8) William

*Per Charlott Jones there was a ninth child born to John and Susan, a daughter named Susan born in 1817. This fact has not been verified by this memorial's creator, however...
**What was found was a daughter born to John and Phoebe named Susan (b. 1816, d. 1880) (for reference: later married to Hiram Aldrich Straight Sr.), well before John supposedly married Phoebe in 1828. If the marriage date is wrong and Susan was in fact Phoebe's child, then Issac J. was not Susan Dolan's child (and that really messes things up). In some records Susan is listed as a half-sister to Henry and Samuel, supposedly her full brothers. Either the Lasswell/Dolan records are incorrect, or the record for Susan (Laswell) Straight is incorrect. The only other option is that John Lasswell and Phoebe Morris had Susan out of wedlock, while John was still married to Susan Dolan. [if you have any information that can clear this up, please contact this memorial's creator]

***Andrew's birth and death dates and spouse information provided by Pat Lasswell, but not otherwise verified by this memorial's creator.
****Six of John and Susan Dolan's children, John, James, Philip, Jacob, Aaron, and William are not mentioned in any other databases or records, thus it is hard to confirm that they even existed.

SECOND FAMILY
Married (#2) Phoebe Stiren Morris (b. abt. 1790 in Virginia, d. 1846) on January 6, 1828 in Edgar County IL. Sired two** children:
??) Susan (b. 1816, d. 1880)
1) Henry (b. 1830, d. 1861)
2) Samuel (b. 1832, d. 1911)
**Pat Lasswell's research suggests that there were additional children by wife Phoebe.

DEATH
Died in Cass Township, Fulton County, IL, and buried in Old McBeth Cemetery on a bluff above and to the West of the Spoon River (now abandoned and unmarked). His headstone (but not his remains) was moved in the 1980's to the Buckeye Cemetery on East Buckeye Church Road (land donated to the church by John's son Samuel), thus technically making the headstone shown here a "cenotaph".

ANCESTRAL PATH (John's father, grandfather, etc.):
Andrew Lasswell (b. abt. 1743)
Jacob Lasswell (b. 1698, d. 1764)
William Lasswell (b. abt. 1639 in England)

Relationship to this memorial's creator: Paternal 3x Great Grandfather

OTHER PEOPLE'S RESEARCH
From Pat Lasswell: Here are my Grandfather's (Don C Lasswell) notes from our trip to Cuba and Smithfield in 1987/1988:

"The old mill stone that was in Andrew Lasswell Sr's grist mill (1820's Putt
Creek) was moved from the Lasswell family to the Church twelve years ago."

"One of my greatest satisfactions was to visit the grave site of our great
great grandfather, John Lasswell, who was born in 1773, coming to the area
from Virginia in 1830 arriving by ox cart by way of Indiana."

"The McBeth cemetery is located on a hill ... next ... to Spoon River off
the main road on private land among large trees and underbrush, the location
only known to a few of the old timers. George Lasswell Jr., stated that he
only learned of it about 30 years ago when one night while coon hunting, he
happened upon it. George and Harold Lasswell then took us to the Buckeye
Cemetery and Church which is located on a hill on the opposite side of the
river. There, we viewed the well-kept cemetery and grave site of Samuel
Lasswell and of John Lasswell's stone that had just recently been removed
from McBeth and placed beside the grave of his son. The Church was built in
1868 on land that once belonged to John Lasswell and later donated to the
Church by his younger son Samuel."

END

Many thanks to Amy for bringing the McBeth-Buckeye transfer to light, Pat Lasswell for clarifying the McBeth-Buckeye transfer question, and to Charlott Jones for providing additional information about John's first family.
