VALDOSTA, Ga. - Melvin Daniel Peters, 70, formerly of Memphis, died Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at Smith Northview Hospital in Valdosta, Ga. He was born in Naylor, Ga. He graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor?s degree in speech pathology, and a master?s degree in management of mental retardation facilities. He was administrator of the Center for Developmental Disabilities at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. He was a kind and caring person, with interests in church and charities, including M.A.R.C. in Memphis. He and his wife traveled throughout this country, England, France and Italy.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Valdosta with the Rev. Dr. Richard Hart officiating. Burial will follow in Cat Creek Cemetery in Valdosta. Carson McLane Funeral Home of Valdosta is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Speck Peters of Valdosta, Ga.; his mother-in-law, Marzee Speck of Valdosta; a brother-in-law, Tom Speck of Black Mountain, N.C.; two nieces, Rachel Speck of Black Mountain, N.C., and Sarah Isaacs of Memphis; and his wife?s many cousins who live in Mississippi, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama and Pennsylvania.
