Matthew Dewey Thomas Hallmark was the son of George William Hallmark and Sarah Calvert. Sarah died in Alabama before the move to Texas and her burial is as yet unknown.

Matthew Dewey Thomas Hallmark, or Thomas as he was called, married Amy Anna Hallmark. Matthew and Amy were cousins. They married about 1843 in Houston County, Texas.

Most of their thirteen children were born in Houston County. William Jefferson, George Washington, John Thomas, Sarah Elizabeth, David Satterwhite, Mary Minerva, Amy Ann, and Martha Elvira.

Sometime between 1860 and 1862 they moved to Bell County, Texas. Their last four children, Rufus Mynatt, Matilda Jane, Alfred, and Louisa Emmaline were born there.
