Hugh P. Herman, 76, a survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, died Sunday in his Villa Park home. A native of Chicago, Mr. Herman was a boatsman mate first class on the USS Tennessee when the U.S. joined World War II. An iron worker, he belonged to the Iron Workers Union Local 1. Survivors include his wife, Olga; a son, Hugh Patrick III; two daughters, Diane Maida and Carol Brown; and nine grandchildren. Hugh's grandson Sgt. Mark A. Maida was killed in Iraq in 2005.
