Joseph served in Company I 2nd Minnesota Cavalry during the Civil War. He was mustered in 31 Oct 1863 and mustered out on 22 Nov. 1865

Joseph W. Emerson 'died
June 17th. 1915 age 88 years,
three months and thirteen
days, at the home of his
grand nephew, Vernon Brown
from where the funeral services
where held Saturday
last. Rev. Stewart Smith
conducting the service undertaker
L. W. Andrist in charge.
The pall bearers were civil
war veterans: E. L. Slingerland,
Joseph Greeney, Harvey
Ferrin, Moses Kimball, H.
P. Ballard, W. Freeman,
internment in Evergreen cemetery.
Deceased was born in the
state of Vermont, March
27th, 1836, came west before
the war, enlisted 1861 in the
first regiment Minn cavalry.
He was never married, leaves
one sister, Mrs. Birge, Pine
Island, Minn., four nieces
Mrs. Geo. Ballard Kasson,
Mrs. Charles Brown Grantsburg,
Wis., Mrs. Reifsnidei
and Mrs. Klieniper, Minneapolis
other relatives S.. C.
Emerson, Stovel, S. D., I. S.
Birge, Pine Island.
