Carl was born to John and Jessie P. (Merrill) Sampson. The 1910 census shows his siblings to be; Luiz, Ester, Paul, Markis and John. Carl was divorced from his first wife and later married widow, Clara (Cantrell) Clevenger, who already had four children by her first marriage. He served in the Navy during WWII and suffered wounds that required pain-killers for the rest of his life. He was a house painter by trade.
