SPEARMAN - Raye Gibson, 100, died Sunday, May 24, 2009.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in First Baptist Church of Spearman with the Rev. John Scott and the Rev. Jim Medley officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home at Spearman.

Raye was born July 28, 1908, in Chillicothe. After graduation from Canute High School, Raye held several jobs including a school bus driver, a grocery clerk, an apple and orange picker in California and a construction worker on the building of Route 66.

After marrying the love of his life, Helen Ruth Smith, on May 10, 1942, in Altus, Okla., he worked in Mongomery Wards for a while before landing in Spearman in 1944.

He worked at Russell Dry Goods for a short time before starting to work for Pete Fisher at Cut Rate Grocery Store. While working there, he was proud to be recognized as the employee of the year by the Rotary Club of Spearman.

He retired from the grocery store after 42 years at the age of 85. However, retirement was not to his liking so he started a used furniture business and also became the peanut and pumpkin peddler in the fall. He continued to sell peanuts until he was 100.

Raye was also a gardener and would grow vegetables just so he could give his friends and neighbors the fruits of his labor.

He had lived in the area since 1946, moving from Duncan, Okla. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Spearman.

Raye loved meeting and talking with people. He loved living in Spearman and thought it was the best town in Texas. Above all, he loved his family and was proud of each and every one. He would delight in our family celebrations and get-togethers. He truly will be missed.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Gibson; a son, Ronald Gibson; two daughters, Karen Cargill of Denver City and Cheryl Salgado and husband Frank of Spearman; four grandchildren, Connie Gibson of Lubbock, Ronda Jennings of Amarillo, Jennifer Jennings of Merkel and Jason Cargill of Denver City; and six great-grandchildren, Trae Dixon, Tarryn Dixon, Megan Jennings, Madclaine Jennings, Julia Cargill and Jared Cargill.

The family suggests memorials be to Stationmaster's House Museum, 30 S. Townsend St., Spearman, TX 79081; or Hansford Manor, 707 S. Roland St., Spearman, TX 79081.
