Samuel Jackson Potts was born near Waverly, Illinois, Macoupin County April 8, 1845 and at the time of his death was aged 69 years, 6 months and 11 days. He was the seventh child of eleven sons and daughters, resulting from the marriage of William Beatty Potts and Rhoda Ann Richards.

His parentage was Southern; his father Wm. B. Potts was by birth a Kentuckian, and his mother a native of Tennessee.

From the farm near Waverly the family removed to near Carlinville where they remained for about five years. At the end of this period a considerable tract of land was purchased in Montgomery county and the home site was chosen in Zanesville township, at about 3 1/2 miles southwest of Raymond on what cam to be known as the W. B. Potts farm.

He was twice married, his first marriage being to Miss Mary Hemphill by which union five children were born, four sons and one daughter, two sons having died when quite small. Those surviving are Robert of Bardolph, IL, Elmer of Tenessee, IL and Mrs. Nina Boyd of Kansas.

After his first marriage, he moved to Kansas where he resided for several years when he returned to Raymond and engaged in the grocery business with his brother, Joseph W. Potts, deceased editor of the Raymond Independent. Later he again returned to Kansas and upon his return to Raymond he was married to Miss Janie Parrott on Nov 4 1894, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Parrott, both deceased. The result of this union was one son, Eugene, who with the mother survive. In early years he joined the Christian church at Pleasant Hill and in later years he moved his membership to the Christian church in Raymond of which church he was a member at the time of this death.

While in Kansas he joined the Masonic Lodge and in the year 1874 on September 17th he was admitted to Raymond Lodge No. 692, A. F. and A. M.

His death occurred Sunday October 18 at 10:45PM after an illness of four days. His health for a year or more previous to that time was poor and grew gradually poorer until the end came.

The funeral was held Tuesday, October 20 at the Christian church at 12:30PM under the auspices of the Masonic Order, with Rev. I. W. Agee, paster of the Christian church of Litchfield delivering the funeral sermon.

The remains were taken to Pleasant Hill cemetery for burial.
