Nellie Dean Downing Barton, age 102, of Holland, KY, passed away Monday, May 25, 2009 at her home. She was born in Allen Co., KY on May 7, 1907, to the late John Aldridge Downing and Nannie Dee Siddens Downing. She graduated from Mt. Zion High School in 1928, the first graduating class. She then attended Western Kentucky Teacher's College and obtained a Life Certificate allowing her to teach. She got her degree in 1959. She taught school 44 years, the first nine in one-room schools. She was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she taught the primary Sunday School class for many years. She was the widow of Tommy Clemons Barton.
She is survived by one sister-in-law Bertha Mae O'Grady, several nephews & nieces: Burl Broughton & wife Earlene of Scottsville, KY, Larry Joe Downing & wife Charlotte of Scottsville, KY, Nieces: Annice Conner of Holland, KY, Sue Nell Harwood & husband Clyde of Holland, KY, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one sister Bessie Broughton and two brothers Joe Downing and Henry Downing.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church at Holland, KY, with burial in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Friends may call at T. W. Crow & Son Funeral Home in Scottsville after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, and the body will lie in state after 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church until time for the service at 2:00 p.m.
