WORLD WAR I VETERAN

John T. Chewning, 73, formerly of Seattle, succumbed to an extended illness at Washington Veterans home, Retsil. He had moved to the home permanently a year ago, after having been a member there briefly in 1957.

Mr. Chewning was a veteran of World War 1. He was born in Kentucky, spending his life before the war in Kansas and after discharge moving frequently between there and Seattle as a mechanic and laborer.

He was a member of Retsil Community Church.

He died Monday at the hospital of the home.

Surviving are a son, Wayne Chewning of Cottage Hill, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Belva L. Mann of Seattle and Mrs. Mary Blair of Hutchinson, Kan., and a brother, Ben of Sterling, Kan.

CHEWNING, John T., Age 73, passed away July 17, 1961 at the Washington Veterans Home, Retsil. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 21, 1961, at 1:30 p.m. under the direction of PENDLETON GILCHRIST FUNERAL HOME, at the Washington Veterans' Home, Retsil, Reverend David L. Assen officiating, and the American Legion Post number 182. Burial to follow in the World War I section of the Retsil Cemetery. Mr. Chewning was born in Greensburg, Kentucky, September 5, 1887. From there he moved to Kansas where he spent most of his life. He served in World War I. Following that he moved to Seattle in 1957. He came to Retsil in 1960. He was a member of the Community Church of Retsil. He is survived by one son, Wayne Chewning, of Collegehill, Illinois; two sisters, Mrs. Belva L. Mann, Seattle, and Mrs. Mary Blair, Hutchinson, Kansas; one brother, Ben Chewning, Sterling, Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews. [published in Bremerton Sun, July 19, 1961, p. 17].
