Chief Radioman Sachs first joined the United States Navy in October of 1933 and after 20 plus years of honorable Naval service, retired in September of 1956. He was both a World War II and Korean War veteran. He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal with two reenlistment bars, National Defense Service medal, American Theater Campaign medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, American Defense Service medal with "Fleet" bar, Korean War Service medal, United Nations Service medal and honorable Service Lapel Button.
