Around the age of nine, James travelled with his mother and other families by wagon train from Fulton County, Illinois, to the Kansas Territory. He and his family moved back to Illinois around 1861 before the start of the American Civil War. Back in Illinois, he worked as a farmer.
When he was 20, James joined the Union Army to fight in the American Civil War. He joined on February 6, 1865, serving as a private in Company I of the 148th Illinois U.S. Infantry. He was mustered out at the end of the war on September 5, 1865. James K. Polk Curless was married to Anna Eliza Ray on 29 Jun 1867 in Schuyler County, Illinois, USA.
