Hampton Sikes was born on 26 April 1834 in Tattnall County, Georgia. His parents were Charlotte Sikes and Jesse Durrence. On 24 June 1854, he married Mary Lewis in Bulloch County, Georgia. On 31 August 1861, Hampton Sikes enlisted in the Confederate Army, being placed in Company D, 61st Georgia Volunteer Militia, Army of Northern Virginia. He served throughout the War, surrendering with his regiment at Appomattox Court House. He returned home and lived in Bulloch County with his family. He died there in 1888 and is buried in Emmaus (Red Hill) Cemetery in Claxton, Evans County, Georgia.
