Curtis Benton Purinton was the son of Benajah Purinton born in Maine about 1815 and died 2/28/1886 in Black Hawk County, Iowa and Barbara Elizabeth (Gipe) Purinton born before 1812 in Holland, Bucks County, Pennsylvania and died 1885 in Black Hawk County, Iowa.
Curtis enlisted in the Civil War when he was 18 years old June 24, 1861 in Co. G, Fifth Regiment Iowa Volunteers Infantry and mustered July 15, 1861. He served in the western theatre as a private. He reenlisted in Feb. 7,1864 and was transferred to Co. I, Fifth Regiment, Iowa Calvary. In 1865 he was mustered out at the end of the war in Nashville, Tennessee.
He married Catherine Minard in Vinton, Benton Co., Iowa on May 1,1864. They had four children: John Henry, Minnie Mae, James Burlinton, and Cora Ellen.
In 1882 he received a pension for 1/4 disability.
In 1885 he moved to to California with his four children. Catherine died June 14, 1885 in Stonyford, Colusa County, CA.
Curtis married Sarah Gorden July 14, 1891 at Lakeport, Lake County, CA.
He married Catherine Cook March 16, 1905 at Napa City, Colusa County, CA. He died at the Sawtelle Soldiers Home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, CA Dec 4, 1923. He was 80 years old.
