Author, Editor. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, son of the Unitarian theologian Andrews Norton, Charles Eliot Norton went on to become a noted social critic and Art historian. He became chair of the history of Art department at Harvard, his alma mater, and held the role of chair until his retirement in 1898. For a time, he was the editor of "The North American Review" and he was one of several who assisted poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with translating Dante's "Divine Comedy." He married Susan Sedgwick in 1862 and was later named the first president of the Archaeological Institute of America. He edited several collections of letters, including those of George William Curtis, James Russell Lowell, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Thomas Carlyle. He also published several books on architecture, art, and travel. His cousin, Charles William Eliot, went on to become President of Harvard.
