Daniel Giffen was born in Scotland, the oldest son of Robert and Mary Bane Giffen. He married Agnes "Nancy" Bell about 1798. On May 1, 1804 he purchased 134 acres of land on Rough and Ready Run from Robert Bell, his father-in-law, for $268. He lived there with his family for the remainder of his life. He was identified with the Old Tent congregation and reared his family in the Presbyterian faith of his father.
