Elizabeth was George Rae's second wife; they married 6 Nov 1914 in Portland, OR, only nine months after the death of George's first wife, Lottie. The wedding took place at the Multnomah Hotel, and was performed by a minister, F. H. Hayes. (Multnomah Cnty, OR, Marriage cert. # 294296, filed 5 Dec 1914.) Because Elizabeth was 26 years younger than George, and because she had been employed as a maid or servant in his household before the death of his first wife, a bit of a scandal attached itself to this marriage.

The marriage was short-lived. George died in February 1918. He had rewritten his will and left nearly his entire estate to Elizabeth. A contentious and highly publicized trial over the validity of the will occurred in 1919-1920. (In re Estate of George Rae, Multnomah Cnty, OR, Probate Court #16511 [Feb 1919].) In the end, Judge George Tazwell upheld the validity of the will, and Elizabeth prevailed.

Elizabeth then used some of the estate's proceeds to construct an elaborate crypt at the Portland Memorial Mausoleum. She also arranged to have George's body exhumed from River View Cemetery in Portland (where he had been buried next to his first wife Lottie) and moved to the crypt where both Elizabeth and George now repose.
