Johannes Koerten, the son of Koert Stevense and Marretje (Van Covenhoven) Van Voorhees/Van Voorhis, was born in the village of Amersfoort (now Flatlands, in Brooklyn). He married firstly on 19 November 1703 Barbara Van Dyck, daughter of Achias and Jannetje (Lamberts) Van Dyck. Their children were Janetie, Koert, Johannes, Zacharias, Gerret, Maria, Hendrick, and Jacob. He married secondly Sarah Van Vliet, daughter of John and Gertje Van Vliet.

Johannes and Barbara moved to Freehold, New Jersey shortly after their marriage where they owned approximately 200 acres of land. They resided here for some 20 years and then removed to Dutchess County, New York. Here they owned 2790 acres.

Johannes was one of the founders of the Dutch Reformed Church in Fishkill and served for many years as an Elder. He shares a gravestone with his first wife Barbara.

NOTE: From "A Grave Matter" written by Laura Roosa for Melzingah Chapter D.A.R., Fishkill on Hudson (1906) - excerpts by Antonia Houston) - http://www.fishkillreformed.org/Cemetary/A%20Grave%20Matter.htm

"The long note I copied about Johannes Conte [sic] Van Voorhis, b. April 20, 1683, d Oct 10, 1757 seems to be an abridgement of text from Roosa's book. She said the [sic] the bodies of John and Barbara Van Dyck Van Voorhis were first buried in Van Voorhis burying ground on his farm; it was used as such to about 1790. This particular stone was found several years ago (ie ca 1900) when the foundation of the Dutchess Hat Works were being laid, and was preserved and put here by a descendant, Mr Elias Van Voorhis. So another case of 'they moved the stones but not the grave.']"

He was the son of Coert Stephense Van Voorhees and Marritje Gerritse, daughter of Gerrit Wolfertszen and Aeltje Cornelis Cool.

After his marriage to Barbara VanDyck, 19 Nov 1703, he moved his family from Flatlands, Long Island and settled at Freehold, Monmouth County NJ. He bought a farm of 200 acres from Alexander Adams, 8 March 1702.

From there he moved to Fishkill, Duchess County N.Y. [then known as the Rombout Precinct]. There, he purchased 2,790 acres from Philip Verplanck of the Manor of Courtlandt. His land was gracefully located on the Hudson River. He was one of the organizers of the Dutch Church at Fishkill Village where he was an elder for many years.

His descendants universally write the family name "Van Voorhis" and the change from Van Voorhees" must have been made about the time of his death, as his tombstone in the churchyard of the Dutch Church, Fishkill Village has the inscription: Here lies the body of John Van Voorhis Aged 75 Years. Deceased Oct. 10th Anno 1757. On the same stone is the inscription: Here lies the body of Barbara VanDyck Aged 59 years. Deceased Apr. 18 Anno 1743.

He married Sarah VanVleit on 2 May 1744.

The family Bible records the birth of his children written in their father's hand:
