Actress. Primarily a radio performer, she is remembered for portraying reporter Lois Lane in over 1,600 episodes of "Superman" during the 1940s. Born Louise Abras, she was raised in Brooklyn after her father's early death and took the "Joan" half of her professional name to honor Joan Crawford, though the origin of "Alexander" is unclear. After working as a model and gaining stage experience in the Yiddish Theatre of both America and Europe, she turned to radio. Joan was Lois Lane in "Superman", originally on the Mutual Broadcasting System's flagship WOR and later on ABC, from 1940 thru 1951. She was also Della Street in "Perry Mason", appeared in several radio "soaps" including "Light of the World" and "Lone Journey", and had roles in "Dimension X" and "Philo Vance". In addition she provided Lois' voice for a number of "Superman" cartoons and from 1951 until 1955 was a regular panelist on ABC television's "The Name's the Same". Joan essentially retired after her 1954 marriage to wealthy car dealer Arthur Stanton (deceased 1987) though she was to appear on Broadway in the 1964 "Poor Richard" and was to again bring Lois to life for the 1966 season of "The New Adventures of Superman". She lived her final years in the East Hamptons of New York and died of the complications of an intestinal blockage.
