Velda M. Smith

Velda M. (Toon) Smith, 95, Sarasota, Fla., died Tuesday at her home. She was a former Indiana resident.

She was born May 22, 1903, in Wanamaker, to Oral and Maude (Thompson) Toon. She married Omer J. Smith, a former principal at Moral Township High School, and he survives.

Mrs. Smith was a teller and cashier at banks in Acton and Wanamaker for many years. She worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Indianapolis and was bookkeeper at Acton Lumber Co. She was also a homemaker.

She graduated from Central Business College, Indianapolis, in 1922.

Mrs. Smith was a 75-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Acton Chapter No. 173.

Other survivors include two sons, Joseph L. Smith and James R. Smith, both of Bradenton, Fla., seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Stirling-Gerber Funeral Home, Indianapolis, with the Rev. Richard Crowley officiating. Burial will be in Acton Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
