Joy Lee Morgan, 89, of Palmer, passed away early Sunday morning April 26, 2020.
Joy was born on August 19, 1930, in Van Zandt County, Texas, to the late Andrew Jackson and Nora Lavida (McBride) Batey. She married James M. Morgan on November 8, 1950, in Texarkana, Arkansas.
As a youth, Joy had an adventurous spirit. She could be found excitedly racing across a field bareback on a steed or sprinting through a meadow of flowers, shoes flying from her feet as she went. A rambunctious child who, when she wasn’t waging a dirtball war with her siblings, was working on her entrepreneurial dreams in the fields.
She bought her first car after launching a vegetable stand with her first business endeavor. Those earlier experiences served her well, with a gentle hand and a green thumb, she could foster any twig or seedling into a full-fledged garden.
She had a love for music and could often be heard singing along to “These Boots Are Made for Walking” or “Amazing Grace” in the style of Elvis Presley. Joy often joked about being an old maid when she wed Jimmy at the ripe old age of 20. She fell for that dark hair and brown eyes and wasn’t deterred when he said he wanted to have a dozen children.
Challenge accepted, with a wink, and mission accomplished. She had a wonderful sense of humor and an ever-present smile that lit up the room. Never has anyone embodied their name more appropriately. Joy also had an unwavering devotion to her faith. That devotion was an inspiration to her family and friends, what bigger accomplishment than to be a living witness for the Lord. Her work on earth is done, and if you listen closely you certainly will hear, “I’m coming home, I’m coming home.”
Joy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jimmy Morgan; daughter, Brenda Gail Morgan; sons, Norman Scott Morgan and David Morgan; grandson, David Wesley (D.W.) Morgan; granddaughter, Lee Ann Winbery; siblings: Florene Gandy, Morene Mace, Annie Meyer, Jack Batey, Jess Batey, Dan Batey, Florence Mace, Lucille Childress, Josey Batey, and Irene Smith.
Joy Lee is survived by her sons: James M. Morgan, of Gilmer, Texas, Gary L. Morgan, of Dialville, Texas, James Wesley Morgan and his wife, Scarlett, of Menifee, California; Timmy J. Morgan and his wife, Tracy, of Ennis, and Jeffrey Morgan and his wife, Lori, of Celina, Texas; daughters: Nora Louanna Hartley and her husband, Lynn, of Palmer, Marilyn Joy Griffin, of Waxahachie, Kathy Rose Hartley and her husband, Dickey, of Palmer, and Lisa Kay Rider and her husband, Randy, of Corsicana; daughter-in-law, Valerie Morgan, of Wilmer, TX; grandchildren: Monty Morgan, Bryan Morgan, Shahmarie (Sister) Heath, Jason Morgan, Tasha Bedner, David (J.R.)
