Bertha Bender Powell was a remarkable woman ! I was related to her by marriage. In 1956, I married "Grandma
Powell's" great-grandson, Daniel Irby. From 1956 to 1964,
I spent many hours and days visiting with her , her husband Will, and their daughter Gladys....at their home in Spring.
I also met and visited with Bertha's son Jim and his wife Juanita, and their adult children. Jim and Juanita lived on the next lot over, they
looked after his parents. Because Gladys contracted a severe case of polio when she was a
toddler, she was severely disabled. Gladys was a quadriplegic. She was never institutionalized. She was cared for at home, primarily by her mother. Mentally, emotionally, and cognitively, Gladys was a lovely and intelligent person. There was never a hint of self-pity.
As a consequence of aging parents, and a disabled sister,
the Jim Powell family, for at least two generations,
contributed to Bertha and Will Powell's familys' quality of life. All of their homes were bulldozed in the 70's to
make room for the widening of I-45. Bertha's grandson,
Jerry Irby, also had close ties with his grandparents and aunts and uncles in Spring. He spent a lot of time at their house. Bertha was a second mother to him after her daughter Bertha, (Jerry's mother) died prematurely.
Will write more later. CWI
