portion of a newspaper article that appeared in The Daily Times Nov. 4th, 1982. This originally came from Mrs. O.H. (Aulma Salts) Huber of Texas. There are several spellings of the Salts surname - I am repeating it as written.

My grandfather, James Marion Saultz, was a doctor, minister and taught writing in Cades Cove. He had a long white beard and was very dignified and scholarly for his time and surroundings.

For his medical services, he charged $1 a call and furnished all the medicine. Cost of delivering a baby was $5 and he was paid mostly in wheat and corn, labor such as wood chopping or anything he could use in exchange for his service. It took most of the money collected to buy medicine.

He was well-liked by all. He died at the home of John Oliver where he had gone to deliver a baby. He took sick while there and died.

Dr. James M. Saultz and his wife, Nancy, lived in Wear's Valley, Cades Cove, Townsend and Maryville. They spent some time in California with their son Willard, who went to California when a young man.

Both Dr. Saultz and his wife are buried at Bethel Cemetery at Townsend. Grandfather was one of the first to be buried in the cemetery.

Directory of Deceased American Physicians, 1804-1929 Confirms James M. Saults b.1849 and d. Jul 29, 1914 was a licensed allopathic physician in Cades Cove, Tennessee on Jan 29,1912.
