Marjorie Grover Lawlis was born on October 19, 1926 in Houston, Texas to Blanche B. Grover and R. Markham Grover. She was raised and educated in Houston, graduating from Milby High School when she was just sixteen years old. She went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin where she met her future husband, Virgil B. Lawlis. After graduation, the couple married on August 11, 1946 at St. Mark's Methodist Church in Houston. The couple attended medical school at the University of Texas at Galveston and graduated with their MDs in June of 1950. Marge followed her husband to his Air Force assignment in Levelland, Texas, and practiced as a General Physician at the small community hospital there until he was discharged in 1953. They then moved back to Galveston to complete their residencies, hers in Pediatrics and his in Internal Medicine. After finishing their residencies in 1956, the family moved to Austin. Marge practiced as a pediatrician at the state school for the next nine years. She undertook a second residency in 1965 at the Hawthorn Children's Hospital in Michigan and moved on to the next phase of her career as a child psychiatrist. Upon returning to Austin in 1966, she worked as such at the state school until 1972, when she accepted a position as the Associate Director for the Children's Psychiatric Unit. She later became the head psychiatrist for the adolescent unit at the Brown School where she stayed until 1980. Marge then opened up her private practice in psychiatry. She retired from that practice in 1998. At medical school, Marge was one of only five women in her class who completed their degrees, and she enjoyed a long and well-loved career. In addition to being an accomplished pediatrician and child psychiatrist, Marge was also an accomplished photographer, a gourmet cook and a frustrated pianist. She loved anything French or pink and had for a majority of her life (and much to her husband's chagrin) various types of Persian cats. She was a city girl who married a country boy and spent her last years with him on the ranch that he'd worked for all of his life. To those who knew her, this is only further testament to how much they truly loved each other. Marge passed from this life on May 12, 2009. She is survived by her husband of sixty-two years, Dr. Virgil Lawlis of Bastrop; five children, Dr. Grover Lawlis, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Dr. Bryan Lawlis, Burlingame, California, Mr. Mark Lawlis, Bastrop, Texas, Dr. Stephen Lawlis, Georgetown, Texas and Ms. Diane Lawlis Clarke, Amarillo, Texas; and six grandchildren, Ms. Margaret Wilde, Austin, Texas, Ms. Shauna Lawlis, Houston, Texas, Ms. Jessica Lawlis, Coco Beach, Florida, Ms. Sarah Lawlis, Georgetown, Texas, Mr. Jeff Lawlis, Georgetown, Texas and Ms. Madeline Clarke, Amarillo, Texas. The family would like to extend their thanks to her physicians Dr. William Lockett, Dr. William McCarron and Dr. Thomas Blevins and also to her hospice nurse, Lana. They would also like to extend very special thanks to her caregiver, Diane Gleason, without whose help their beloved Marge would never have been able to conclude her life with such an incredible amount of peace and dignity. Thank you. Graveside services will be Friday, May 15, 2009 at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale Street Houston, TX at 2:00 p.m. Memorial service will be Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Calvary Episcopal Church, 1028 Main Street, Bastrop, Texas. Family has requested in lieu of flowers that donations to M.D. Anderson Hospital. Let children walk with Nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life. ~John Muir
